A federal state of the environment report released in NSW, Australia in the early 2000’s examined the decline & potential death of Australia’s agriculture soil and inland waterways and looked at specific soil problems.
The facts of the federal state of the environment report says that if we do nothing, up to 10% of soil useable for agriculture production will be unusable in 20 years—13 million hectares to soil acidity and 6 million hectares to salinity.
Since 1991, the area affected by acidification has increased by an estimated 13 million hectares. Soil acidity is caused by extensive and intensive cropping & over use of chemical fertilisers. It is estimated to cost the state of New South Wales millions of dollars annually. Adding lime is a short term & expensive measure.
With these issues in mind Earthly Worm Works promotes vermiculture & its advantages in the domestic, home use market and in the broad acre, agriculture market.
We feel the earthworm has a lot to contribute to our environment & our soil & if we look after its environment it will, in turn, look after our soil. David has studied these mighty workers and their living needs & feels that while it lives within our soil and is not easily seen that it gets overlooked in regards to what is positive to its environment and what is detrimental to its eco system.
David is very active in the vermiculture industry. Over the past 18 months he has installed a project at the Central Queensland University in Rockhampton where research is being conducted on worm liquidcast & the positive effect it has on growing vegetables hydroponically.
David worked closely with Darryl Jones of the Vital Earth Company for the last 13 years and in 2003 they formed the company, Vemicrobe Internatioanl where they were involved in commercial vermiculture installations & training. Unfortunately, Darryl passed away in October of 2009. He will be sadly missed. Darryl's 23 years of contribution to the vermiculture industry will be remembered for years to come. He was a leader in the industry, training people from around the world the value of the compost worms & the importance & contribution they play in protecting our environment from becoming a toxic waste land.
Carl & Bernie Moro of America came to Australia to be trained in vermiculture by Darryl & Dave & are now promoting the benefits of worm farming in Apopka, Florida.
